Considered the capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose, California is the third largest California city. With world class entertainment, fascinating parks and the most wonderful climate in the country, this gateway to the world is one of the most international cities, welcoming visitors and new residents daily. San Jose is also one of the safest big cities in all of the U.S.
The city was founded as El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe in November 1777, which made it the first civilian village in the colony known as Nueva California. At the time, the main purpose of the city was to supply the Spanish military at Monterey and San Francisco with fresh produce and livestock.
After being a small farming community for more than 150 years, San Jose acquired some of the last remaining undeveloped land near San Francisco Bay. The city then experienced a rapid growth in population, due largely to the return of World War II veterans. During the '50s and '60s, the expansion became quite aggressive as the city annexed more and more land. As the electronics and high tech industries grew, the transition from a farming community to a fully urbanized metropolis accelerated, and this fabulous city we know and love today, was born.
